When @rubyibarra won the NPR tiny desk concert I knew I wanted to make her a pair of sneakers. These custom sneakers are inspired by Ruby — a Filipina voice who didn’t just enter the rap game; she rewrote the rules.
A storyteller by purpose, using a mic like a megaphone for the diaspora — spitting lyrics that remind the world that identity has layers, languages, and lineage.

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, I built this pair using bahag fabric — a textile worn by our indigenous warriors and cultural guardians. Each thread holds memory. Each color carries story. Just like Ruby’s art, it’s a fusion of ancestral strength and modern movement.

Ruby doesn’t just represent herself —
She represents the people, the motherland, the diaspora, the cities we grew up in, the families who crossed oceans, and every Pinay who refuses to be quiet.

This isn’t just a sneaker.

A few months ago I met @manilajune after the NPR tiny desk concert. I told her that I made sneakers and she said she would love for me to make her a pair. It was moment that stayed with me. Here was a woman whose music helped pave the way for generations, a Filipina who carried both her roots and her rhythm into rock history with her band Fanny.

So for Filipino-American History Month I created a bespoke pair for the legendary Filipino American musician, co-founder of the trailblazing rock band @fannyrocks_1970 — one of the first all-female rock bands to sign with a major label.

For this design, I wanted to honor June’s roots and legacy. The upper features fabric from a traditional Filipino barong, a garment that represents grace, resilience, and pride — much like June herself.

This pair celebrates a woman who shattered ceilings in music, carrying both her heritage and her sound into history. This design isn’t just a sneaker — it’s a tribute to legacy, to music, and to the power of representation. 🇵🇭🎸

When I served in the Peace Corps in Ukraine, I remember walking through my small town of Romodan where neighbors shared what little they had, and kids would run up just to practice a few English words with me. I customized this shoe for a fellow RPCV @peacecorpsukraine @peteisaac and I dedicate this design to the people of Ukraine. The blue and yellow honor the flag. The patterns reflect community and perseverance. And every detail is a reminder of the strength I witnessed and the love I still carry for Ukraine.

As Ukraine celebrates and fights for its Independence Day, this sneaker is my tribute — a thank you, a show of solidarity, and a piece of my story stitched into leather and color. 💙💛

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” - Pablo Picasso.

This was a wonderful experience bringing in Cyrus to create these shoes. He has always shown interest in my hobby of shoe making and this was a perfect opportunity to bring him in to help create these shoes. We created custom sneakers and donated them to his school auction. Two of the shoes he signed the colorway and even picked out the leather and material. The third shoe he painted. I can’t wait to see him create more!!!

Last shoe of 2024. Each year we do a secret Santa gift exchange for Merry Merto New Year. The past couple of years I’ve customized a sneaker for my Secret Santa. This year I made a @padres custom Jordan 1 for @myssirk a big Padres fan. Hope you like em. Let’s go padres!!!

My New Year’s resolution for 2024 was to commit to working on the craft of shoe making. I decided to switch a job that I had for 7 years to another one that gave me more flexibility and less stress. I used my time this year to improve my skills with each shoe, I challenged my creativity, became a part of an awesome custom shoe making community, and found a sense of community amongst local small business owners here in DC.
I made over 25 custom pairs of shoes, made hundreds of leather passport wallets and leather cardholders, was a vendor at 8 local markets throughout DC, and entered several online Sneaker battles.

Every step has been a learning experience, and I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement along the way. The process is challenging, but seeing each shoe come to life with personal touches, and knowing that it will make someone feel unique and confident, makes it all worth it.

My New Year’s resolution for 2024 was to commit to working on the craft of shoe making. I decided to switch a job that I had for 7 years to another one that gave me more flexibility and less stress. I used my time this year to improve my skills with each shoe, I challenged my creativity, became a part of an awesome custom shoe making community, and found a sense of community amongst local small business owners here in DC.
I made over 25 custom pairs of shoes, made hundreds of leather passport wallets and leather cardholders, was a vendor at 8 local markets throughout DC, and entered several online Sneaker battles.

Every step has been a learning experience, and I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement along the way. The process is challenging, but seeing each shoe come to life with personal touches, and knowing that it will make someone feel unique and confident, makes it all worth it.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, inspired, and trusted me with their vision this year. Here’s to many more creations, growth. I’m ready for 2025.

The first Filipinos to arrive in the Americas was October 18, 1587 in Morro Bay CA. October is officially recognized as Filipino American History Month. Filipino American history isn’t just the history of Filipinos in America it is embedded into US history itself. From the first Filipino settlements established in Louisiana, to the first Filipino indentured servants in Hawaii, Washington, and Alaska. Filipinos have been an integral part of establishing Farm Unions in Delano with Philip Vera Cruz, and participating as civil rights activists in San Francisco. Today Filipino-Americans are representing the culture in the arts, music, sports, and politics. The theme of FAHM this year is “Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience”. The theme recognizes the ways that Filipino Americans have persisted through systemic oppression and violence, organized to fight against injustice, and overcome adversity.

Know History Know Self, No History No Self. It may look like just another custom shoe to you but these colors, the stars, the sun represent not only Fil-Am history but my own history, my sisters histories, my immigrant father’s history of enlisting in the Navy to bring his family here, my mother’s history of bringing Filipino desserts to San Diego, my grandfather’s history of working in the grape fields of Delano, and the future of my own son and the legacy he will bring. Spent the past couple of days teaching Cy’s daycare teacher @the.educator.ms.hazel the craft of making a shoe. I never thought I would ever teach a class but it reminded me of how challenging it was when I made my first shoe. She did great and I hope she continues to learn and create. Can’t wait to see your second pair!!!

I wasn’t able to go to Dallas to celebrate the mother-in-laws 70th birthday so I decided to make her some Bollywood inspired custom Jordan 1’s.

I wasn’t able to go to Dallas to celebrate the mother-in-laws 70th birthday so I decided to make her some Bollywood inspired custom Jordan 1’s.

Had the privilege and honor to build these custom Air Force 1’s for a good family friend @experienceourmemories to commemorate the one year anniversary of his father. Growing up I remembered Uncle Bert always wearing a Barong Tagalog at many family parties. So it was a real honor to be able to use his very own Barong Tagalog to make these shoes.

A Barong Tagalog is an embroidered long-sleeved formal shirt for men and a national dress of the Philippines. Barong tagalog combines elements from both the precolonial native Filipino and colonial Spanish clothing styles.
